Medical Billing Office Assistant Training

CHI, recognizing the continued employment growth of the health care industry, is offering a new 280-hour Medical Billing/Office Assistant training program FREE to qualified applicants. Funded by the Westchester County Department of Social Services, the program will be held for eight (8) weeks of full day classes conducted Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.  The first six weeks (210 hours) will consist of classroom training.  Two additional weeks (70 hours) of intensive job search activities will be included for students to better assist them in their transition from students to job seekers.

The training will feature instruction in the Medisoft Network Professional software package series 11, which is the latest edition utilized by practices nationwide. With MEDISOFT, offices can automate paperwork necessary for HMOs, PPOs, and private insurers, as well as Medicare, Medicaid, and workers’ compensation insurance. The Medical Manager component makes it easy to manage appointments, recall clinical information, and perform other office duties.

The program is designed to meet the occupational demands of this field, and will include Medical Terminology, Medical Coding, Medical Billing and Keyboarding. By the end of the training, participants will be able to keyboard 30-40wpm, be fluent in medical terminology, competent in medical coding and billing and proficient in the Medisoft software program.

Medical billing and medical office administrators are occupations in big demand.  They perform routine administrative and clinical tasks to keep offices and clinics of physicians, podiatrists, chiropractors, and optometrists running efficiently. The role is not of a physicians’ assistant who diagnoses, examines and treats patients. The duties of a medical office assistant include answering telephones, greeting patients, updating and filing patient medical records, completing insurance forms, handling correspondence, scheduling appointments, arranging hospital admissions and laboratory services, and handling billing and bookkeeping. They are also responsible for verifying insurance eligibility, coding, follow up reports/procedures, creating claims, managing specimens and archiving. Graduates may also qualify for a variety of administrative support occupations as a result of their training. They may even advance to office manager or pursue additional education to enter other health occupations, such as nursing and medical technology. Since the foundation is there, employment opportunities are extensive.

Most employers prefer to hire graduates of formal programs. Such programs are offered in vocational-technical high schools, post secondary vocational schools, community or junior colleges as well colleges and universities. CHI Career Services, a division of Community Housing Innovations, Inc., has developed a means for persons unable to attend these formal resources of training to have an opportunity to attain the same skills free through an intense short-term training program. CHI’s Medical Billing/Office Assistant Training program is more than adequate for students to compete in today’s entry level medical job market.
