CHI Career Services is implementing this new program, funded by the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, Division of Employment and Transitional Supports. Of the individuals currently receiving Public Assistance in Westchester County, 50% lack a high school diploma or GED and the majority of them are reading at a fourth to sixth grade level. With support from the Westchester County Department of Social Services (DSS), CHI has been awarded a grant to develop an Educational Resources for Adult and Family Literacy Program to enhance CHI’s existing Career Services programs. Currently, the agency’s two computer-based vocational courses, Medical Billing and Administrative Intake Specialist, are funded by DSS. By adding this resource, CHI will provide a continuum of options for a wide variety of TANF-eligible (Temporary Assistance to Needy Families) customers. CHI will bring together existing resources and the Adult Literacy, Workplace Literacy, Family Literacy and Job Readiness Training programs. Many of the Literacy Program participants will be able to graduate into one of the other Career Services computer training courses. This new component will provide instruction and support for academic remediation and adult basic education, ESL instruction, GED preparation, financial and family literacy services. It will also include educational support for parents to enhance the success of their children in school, instruction and support for family budgeting and skill-building in personal finance, employment and post employment services. All services will be designed to remove barriers to employment and foster economic independence.
