CHI makes the case for supportive housing on WNBC-TV

A former crack addict for 20 years, who abandoned her baby at the hospital three years ago, has been reunited with her child, thanks to supportive housing. Community Housing Innovations, Inc., which pioneered the federal program on Long Island 12 years ago, provided a home to Juanique Rhodes just over one year ago, after she completed drug rehab.  Unlike many addicts who fail after going back to the streets, Juanique had the support of an affordable apartment and case management to get her life back together.  Her amazing story aired on WNBC-TV News last week.

CHI Teams with WESTHAB to Save New Rochelle Project

A contentious affordable development in New Rochelle that was facing a critical deadline without the financing required to save it.  That’s when WESTHAB Development Director Robert Sanborn called Community Housing Innovations to see if it was willing to share a $1 million award from New York State for a White Plains affordable project that had died in White Plains due to warring partners.

The project involved construction of 25 affordable apartments at 41-47 Clinton Place. The CHI funding will  subsidize 12 units for single adults, including veterans. Together, CHI and WESTHAB asked that the $1 million grant award be increased and the state responded with an additional $300,000, which allowed the project to succeed.

“We are pleased that CHI was able to allow WESTHAB to make this excellent project a reality,” said CHI executive director Alexander Roberts.
